Koninklijke Metaalwarenfabriek J. Daalderop & Zn. (KMD), Tiel – Dutch metalware and lighting manufacture since 1880Foundation and location:The company later known as Koninklijke Metaalwarenfabriek J. Daalderop & Zn. – usually referred to in the trade as "KMD Daalderop" or simply "Daalderop Tiel" – was founded in 1880 by the coppersmith Johannes Nicolaas Daalderop in Tiel, province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. The starting point was the takeover of the steam copper turnery ("stoomkoperdraaierij") of the widow Pas in the Waterstraat in Tiel. In 1883 Johannes Daalderop additionally took over an existing coppersmith's workshop, from which the later factory developed. In 1887 he moved the business to a new, larger site and significantly expanded the production programme; in 1889 the factory was relocated to the Binnenhoek site in Tiel, where the "De Kranshof" residential complex stands today. From the middle of the 19th century, Tiel was one of the centres of the Dutch metalware industry.Corporate development and "Koninklijke" statusAfter the death of the founder Johannes Nicolaas Daalderop in 1901, his sons took over the management of the company. Around 1900 the factory already employed about 150 people. In 1917 the business was converted into a public limited company and was thereafter called "NV Koninklijke Metaalwarenfabriek voorheen J. Daalderop & Zonen" (Royal Metalware Factory, formerly J. Daalderop and Sons) – which is the origin of the abbreviation "KMD" still in use in the collector and vintage market today. By the end of the 1930s Daalderop employed around 1,000 people and was one of the largest employers in Tiel. After the Second World War, Daalderop remained active in the metalware and household appliances sector. Since 1985 no small household appliances have been manufactured in Tiel; the company has since focused on hot water and heating equipment, while historical lamps, decorative objects and tableware are sought-after collectors' items on the international vintage market.Product range and materials:The product programme of Koninklijke Metaalwarenfabriek Daalderop was broadly diversified from the outset. Around 1900 the factory produced petroleum and gas lamps in series, along with pans, kettles, tea and coffee services, serving trays, smokers' sets, clocks, vases and umbrella stands. The main materials used were copper, tinplate, nickel and alpaca (nickel silver). After the First World War the range was extended to include electrical household appliances – first an electrically heated shaving mug, followed shortly afterwards by boilers and hot water appliances, which still form the core of production today. For the lighting output, in addition to the petroleum and gas lamps of the early period, table lamps, desk lamps and workshop lamps of the 1920s and 1930s are particularly well documented, many of them in chromed or nickel-plated metal with a black lacquered or enamelled base. Copper, brass and alpaca objects ("Royal Holland Pewter") became a distinctive trademark of the company.Designers and documented models:Daalderop worked with trained designers from early on, and their names are documented in scholarly literature and museum collections. The most important in-house designer was the sculptor and ceramist Meine Huisenga (1876–1946), who was hired as a designer in 1904 and remained active with the company until the beginning of the Second World War. Numerous designs in the style of the Dutch "Nieuwe Kunst" (the constructive variant of Art Nouveau in the tradition of Jan Eisenloeffel) are attributed to him, including jugs and kettle sets on rechauds around 1905/10.Between 1906 and 1907 Klaas van Aken (1882–1947), like Huisenga a graduate of the Kunstnijverheidsschool Quellinus in Amsterdam, also worked for Daalderop; during this period he designed mainly clocks and lamps. In the 1920s the Tiel drawing teacher Anton Vincent Cornelis Pohl (1876–1942), who taught at the HBS in Tiel, worked as a freelance designer for Daalderop and introduced the vocabulary of the Amsterdamse School into the factory's design language. The late 1920s and 1930s produced a series of technically remarkable lamps in "Machine Age" and Bauhaus style. A machine-age desk lamp in chromed steel is dated to around 1928. Particularly well known is the counterweight table lamp called "De Tuimelaar" (also "Duikelaar", or in English/French "The Tumbler" / "Tumbler"), with a bell-shaped shade and a curved arm resting on a separate metal ring base; the specialist trade documentation dates it around 1928–1935 and attributes it to the influential Dutch modernist Willem Hendrik Gispen (1890–1981). Several factory reference numbers are documented for this model family, including "TL1036" and "TL1082" (Early Days, Amsterdam), "TH50" (Alta Design) and "L1454" (De-Spot). The French vintage platform Selency documents the version as a nickel-plated iron lamp measuring H 40 × W 14 × D 25 cm. Further documented lamps from the 1930s include chromed desk lamps with a black enamelled base plate and central rotary switch in Bauhaus style; an example dated 1935 recorded by Haffmans Antiek measures 30 cm shade diameter and 42 cm in height.Stylistic classification:Daalderop's early objects around 1900/10 belong to the Dutch Nieuwe Kunst and are stylistically related to the works of Jan Eisenloeffel and the Amsterdam "constructieve" school. The 1920s are strongly influenced by the Amsterdamse School; from the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s, Art Deco as well as Bauhaus and Machine Age forms appear. In the international vintage trade the lamps are therefore listed under "Dutch Art Deco", "Bauhaus", "Machine Age" and "Modernism".Market presence todayHistorical lamps and metal objects by KMD Daalderop are regularly traded on international vintage design platforms, including 1stDibs, Pamono, Vntg, Catawiki, Selency, Whoppah and Marktplaats, and in specialist design galleries such as Early Days (Amsterdam), Drew Pritchard, Studio Alium, Early Bird Gallery, De Vreugde Design, XYZ Gallery, Alta Design, Haffmans Antiek, Dehuiszwaluw, De-Spot and Eklektik. The Flipje en Streekmuseum Tiel has also dedicated an exhibition, "Daalderop, van Jugendstil tot heden", to the company's history. Today's Daalderop B.V. in Tiel continues to produce hot water and heating systems, while historic lamps are only available on the secondary market.Key facts at a glance:• Company name: Koninklijke Metaalwarenfabriek J.
