Highlights:
Manufacturer: Hillebrand Leuchten, Germany
Model: 8971
Period: 1970s
Origin: Germany
Style: Mid-Century Modern, Northern European
Particulars: Pair of matching wall sconces in structured ice glass with characteristic horizontal ribbed texture; original brass bolts and square brass back plate; original white textile cables; dark green metal housing with wall mounting slots on reverse; E14 socket; atmospheric warm light effect when illuminated — the ribbed ice glass diffuses light with particular softness
Ideal for: Living rooms, hallways, bedrooms, Mid-Century and Scandinavian-style interiors, collectors of German vintage lighting

Description:
The Hillebrand 8971 wall sconces offer something that few 1970s German lighting designs achieve as cleanly: a completely resolved relationship between material and light. The structured ice glass shade — its surface worked into a dense pattern of horizontal ribs — does not simply diffuse the light source. It transforms it, breaking the point light of the E14 bulb into a soft, even luminosity that spreads across the glass surface with a warmth that is immediately atmospheric.

Ice glass was a favoured material of European lighting designers in the late 1960s and 1970s for exactly this reason: its surface structure creates a visual texture that reads differently under different lighting conditions, giving the sconce an almost animated quality as the light shifts through the day. The horizontal ribbing of the 8971 shade is particularly well-resolved — fine enough to create genuine visual complexity, substantial enough to read clearly from across a room.

The hardware is equally considered: original brass bolts secure the glass shade with precision, the square brass back plate mounts cleanly to the wall, and the dark green metal housing on the reverse carries the wall mounting slots that allow precise positioning. The original white textile cables are present and intact — a detail that confirms the unrestored, all-original condition of both sconces.

Hillebrand Leuchten was one of Germany's most significant lighting manufacturers of the postwar era, producing a wide range of interior and exterior lighting that combined functional clarity with considered material choices. The 8971 is a strong example of the house at its mid-decade best.

Condition:
Both sconces are in very good vintage condition. The ice glass shades are intact with no cracks or chips. The brass bolts and back plates show light age-appropriate patina. The original white textile cables are present. The dark green metal housing is intact. The electrical components should be inspected by a qualified electrician before use.

Product Safety

This lamp is an original vintage piece. Prior to sale, a visual and functional inspection was carried out (cable, plug, socket, strain relief) as well as a test run. It has not been comprehensively tested in accordance with current VDE standards. Due to its age, the electrical components may pose risks (e.g. aged insulation, missing earth conductor). Before connecting to the 230V mains, it is therefore strongly recommended to have the lamp inspected and, if necessary, updated by a qualified electrician. Use is at the owner's own risk.
