Scandinavian Designer Timo Sarpaneva for Rosenthal Studio-Line — Ceramic Table Lamp, "Sarpaneva Kollektion", Mid Century 1970–1972
Elegant ceramic table lamp by Timo Sarpaneva for the Rosenthal Studio-Line, c. 1970–1972. This rare and characteristic object comes from a short-lived ceramic collection that Sarpaneva developed exclusively for Rosenthal in the early 1970s – significantly rarer on the market and far less documented than the famous Suomi tableware service of 1976.
Highlights: - Design: Timo Sarpaneva for Rosenthal Studio-Line, c. 1970–1972 - Rare ceramic table lamp from the early "Sarpaneva Kollektion" - Sculptural combination of ceramic body and glass diffuser - Iconic example of the Rosenthal Studio-Line collaboration with Scandinavian design - Ideal as an object lamp on a sideboard, console or bedside table in discerning interiors
Description: The lamp consists of stacked, spherical ceramic elements with a characteristic black glaze, crowned by a round spherical shade. In this composition, Sarpaneva translates his sculptural sensibility directly into a functional light object. The model is depicted in an original Rosenthal Studio-Line advertising brochure for the Sarpaneva Kollektion, which further confirms the authenticity and attribution of the piece. As the collection was produced only during the short period of approximately 1970 to 1972, lamps from this series are today exceptionally rare and correspondingly sought-after.
This ceramic table lamp was created as part of one of the most significant European design collaborations of the post-war period: the partnership between Rosenthal Studio-Line and Finnish designer Timo Sarpaneva. While Sarpaneva's porcelain service "Suomi" of 1976 is today regarded as an icon of the Rosenthal Studio-Line, his early ceramic collection for Rosenthal remained considerably rarer and is documented in only a few surviving examples.
The lamp presented here displays Sarpaneva's typical signature: a clear, organic form reduced to the essential, combined with a sculptural presence in the room. The stacked ceramic body and the resting glass diffuser form a compelling ensemble that, when switched off, reads as an independent object, and when switched on, emits a calm, even light. As an object lamp, it functions superbly in a living room or bedroom, in a design collection, or as a restrained yet highly refined accent in minimalist interiors where individual, carefully chosen pieces are meant to take centre stage.
The Designer: Timo Sarpaneva (1926–2006) is among the defining designers of Finnish design in the second half of the 20th century. He received Grand Prix awards at the Milan Triennale in 1954 and 1957, the Lunning Prize in 1956 – the most prestigious Nordic design award of his time – and was appointed Honorary Royal Designer for Industry of the Royal Society of Arts in London in 1963. In 1967, the Royal College of Art, London, awarded him an honorary doctorate. His long-standing collaboration with Iittala began in 1951; the partnership with Rosenthal and the Studio-Line followed around 1970 and produced, among other things, the award-winning service "Suomi".
Condition: The upper part of the lamp has a stress crack in one place (see photo). Otherwise the lamp is in very good vintage condition with minimal age-related traces on the ceramic and glass. No major damage, only light signs of use and possibly slight glaze crazing, as is typical for ceramics of this period.

Product Safety
This lamp is an original vintage piece. Prior to sale, a visual and functional inspection was carried out (cable, plug, socket, strain relief) as well as a test run. It has not been comprehensively tested in accordance with current VDE standards. Due to its age, the electrical components may pose risks (e.g. aged insulation, missing earth conductor). Before connecting to the 230V mains, it is therefore strongly recommended to have the lamp inspected and, if necessary, updated by a qualified electrician. Use is at the owner's own risk.
Manufacturer
Rosenthal is a German manufacturer that brings its expertise in porcelain and ceramics to table lamps and lamp bases, producing high-quality design lamps since the 1960s. Characteristic features are sculptural lamp bases in porcelain or ceramics, frequently created in collaboration with renowned designers such as Bjørn Wiinblad, functioning as both art object and light source simultaneously. As a result, Rosenthal lamps are particularly well suited to interiors where decorative light objects are sought that work both as a design statement and as atmospheric lighting.
