The company and its corporate names

Veca spa – usually shortened to "Veca" in the international trade and in the vintage-design community – is an Italian manufacturer whose history reaches back into the late 1920s and whose products are today best known in two categories: (1) high-quality bathroom fittings (furniture, mirrors, accessories, shower cabins) and (2) an iconic post-war output of wall sconces, pendant and ceiling lights and illuminated mirrors in the idiom of Italian mid-century modernism and Space-Age design of the 1960s and 1970s. The company is registered in the Italian commercial register as "Veca spa" with REA number 155811 Milan.
Several corporate names are historically documented: the company was founded in November 1928 in Milan under the name "Cesana & C. SA" (società anonima per azioni), initially seated at Corso di Porta Ticinese with a starting capital of L. 100,000. Its declared object was the production of articles for home furnishing ("articoli per l'arredamento della casa"), coded under the Italian ATECO index 28.75.1. After a post-war conversion to srl and a further conversion to snc in 1966, the company was transformed once more in 1967 into a società per azioni and adopted the name "Veca Cesana & C." – while at the same time refocusing its production exclusively on bathroom fittings. These archival details are publicly accessible through the entries in the Sistema Archivistico Nazionale and Lombardia Beni Culturali on the producer "Veca spa" (entity no. MIDB001907, LOD identifier san.cat.sogP.52862).
In 1987 the company moved its registered office from Milan to the small town of Cassano d'Adda (Province of Milan) and adopted the current name "Veca spa". In the same year it inaugurated a manufacturing plant in Fara Gera d'Adda (Province of Bergamo), which remained active until 1994. In 1994 production was transferred to a facility in Pagazzano (also in the Province of Bergamo, Strada Provinciale 129 per Treviglio). After the Pagazzano plant was closed in 1997, Veca spa joined the INDA – Industria Nazionale Degli Accessori group, which had already been active since 1944 and was by then one of the leading European suppliers of bathroom accessories (see the section "Group affiliation").

1928 foundation – pre-war and post-war production

The founding deed dates from November 1928. The company "Cesana & C. SA" was established in Milan at Corso di Porta Ticinese and was one of many Milanese household and furnishing workshops of those years that benefited from the emerging demand of an urban middle and upper class. Its original object was defined broadly as "produzione di articoli per l'arredamento della casa" – the production of articles for home furnishing. This broad scope gave the company latitude in its first decades to extend its range across several furnishing categories, including metalwork, glass and mirror products.
Several corporate transformations followed in the post-war period (srl, then snc in 1966, then spa in 1967), reflecting the transition from a small pre-war joint-stock company into a mid-sized industrial producer. It is notable that the Fondazione Fiera Milano archive on the INDA group records that INDA "in the 1960s" acquired shareholdings in a separately managed "Veca (Vetreria di Cassano – founded 1929)" in order to broaden its own range of bathroom accessories with glass items. The two archives overlap: they indicate that the glass and mirror business linked to Cesana & C. in Cassano was already tied by capital to the INDA group during the 1960s – that is, even before the formal renaming in 1967.

1967 – strategic focus on bathroom fittings

The decisive strategic pivot came in 1967: with the conversion into a società per azioni and the adoption of the new name "Veca Cesana & C.", the company committed itself exclusively to bathroom fittings. The range now covered bathroom furniture (mobili), mirrors (specchi), accessories (accessori) and shower cabins (cabine doccia). This placed Veca in a fast-growing Italian market segment which, in the 1960s, was driven by the belated Italian sanitation boom, by post-war industrial housing construction and by the generalisation of the domestic bathroom as a properly designed room. The company's final capital after this conversion stood at L. 4,737,600,000 (Italian lira), underlining its mid-sized industrial character.
Lighting production of the 1960s and 1970s – today's collector classics
In parallel with the bathroom range, Veca developed during the 1960s and 1970s an internationally recognised production of decorative domestic lighting – the facet of the brand that is by far the most frequently searched for in today's international vintage trade. Characteristic pieces are wall sconces, pendant and ceiling lights and illuminated mirrors in a combination of chromed steel or chromed metal with coloured, cut or hand-blown glass – often in classic Murano colours (cobalt blue, emerald green) as well as in smoked glass, crystal glass and opaline glass.
The formal language of these series belongs, on the one hand, to Italian mid-century modernism and, on the other, explicitly to Space-Age design: geometrically cut glass plates, often in hexagonal or octagonal arrangement, enclose a central light source; the chromed metal frame remains visually restrained and functions purely as a holder, so that the light itself and the faceted glass edges dominate the image. Contemporary dealer and collector descriptions (for example Pamono, 1stDibs, Chairish, intOndo) speak of a Fontana-Arte-adjacent idiom – a formal language modelled on Fontana Arte (Milan, founded 1932 by Luigi Fontana and Gio Ponti).
This stylistic proximity had a real commercial background: many vintage pieces of the 1960s and 1970s carry the twin attribution "Veca per Fontana Arte" or "Fontana Arte per Veca" – a pointer to a two-way supplier and distribution relationship between the two houses. Both wall mirrors ("Mid-Century wall mirror by Fontana Arte for Veca") and wall sconces ("Veca For Fontana Arte, Pair Of Italian Wall Sconces In Steel And Crystal") are documented. No exclusive contractual link is documented in the archives; the vintage-design literature therefore treats the relationship as a project-based or series-based cooperation.

Iconic series and signature pieces (vintage collector market)

Pendant light in blue glass and chrome, 1970s – one of the best-known Veca icons; six cobalt-blue glass plates in geometric arrangement enclose the light source; chromed metal frame, silver top-mirror bulb, indirect upward and inward light. Auction levels on international vintage platforms are typically in the four-digit euro range.

A defining feature of the 1960s and 1970s series is the maker's signature on the back of the chromed mounting plates. Vintage dealers and collectors use this signage on the reverse as an authenticity check today.

Designer attribution and authorship

Unlike, for example, Ingo Maurer, Achille Castiglioni or Gio Ponti, Veca did not build its brand on named "author designers": in the international trade the series run overwhelmingly under the plain brand attribution "Veca". In the context of its cooperation with Fontana Arte, specialist vintage dealers (including Pamono UK) do document authorship by the mid-1960s Italian lighting designer Nilo Veca for individual Fontana-Arte chandeliers and sconces ("Vintage Art Thick Glass Chandelier by Nilo Veca for Fontana Arte, 1960s"). The current source base for this attribution is thin and primarily dealer-side; it does not permit either a full biographical reconstruction of Nilo Veca or a clear determination of whether this designer was a namesake, a company insider or simply an attribution line. This attribution uncertainty is openly noted in the specialist design literature.
