Description:
The Fazzoletto — Italian for handkerchief — is one of the most recognised and most collected pendant lamp forms to emerge from the Murano glass tradition. The design concept is as simple as it is effective: a sheet of molten Murano glass, mouth-blown and then allowed to drape and fold under its own weight before it sets, producing a shade whose form is determined as much by gravity and the glassblower's skill as by any predetermined template. The result is a pendant that is simultaneously rigorous in concept and completely organic in execution — no two are identical.

In black, the Fazzoletto takes on a character that the lighter colour variants cannot match. Where white or amber glass reads as luminous and atmospheric, black glass reads as sculptural and architectural — an object that asserts its presence in a room whether lit or unlit. When illuminated, the black glass transmits a warm, intimate light through its walls while the draped form casts shadows of considerable complexity. Unlit, it is a sculpture.

This example is attributed to Carlo Nason, the designer most closely associated with AV Mazzega's most celebrated works of the 1960s and 1970s. AV Mazzega, founded in 1946 by Angelo Vittorio Mazzega on the island of Murano, became one of the twentieth century's most significant lighting manufacturers through its commitment to exceptional glassmaking combined with considered design. Mazzega lamps are today recognised as works of applied art and appear regularly on platforms including 1stDibs, Pamono and at international auction.

Condition:
The pendant is in very good vintage condition. The black Murano glass shade is intact with no cracks or chips. The draping form is fully preserved. The electrical components have been visually and functionally inspected and tested; inspection by a qualified electrician is recommended before extended use.

Product Safety

This lamp is an original vintage piece. Prior to sale, a visual and functional inspection was carried out (cable, plug, socket, strain relief) as well as a test run. It has not been comprehensively tested in accordance with current VDE standards. Due to its age, the electrical components may pose risks (e.g. aged insulation, missing earth conductor). Before connecting to the 230V mains, it is therefore strongly recommended to have the lamp inspected and, if necessary, updated by a qualified electrician. Use is at the owner's own risk.
