French Tripod Table Lamp, Attr. René Mathieu for Lunel

Star-Perforated Red Diabolo Shade, 1950s

A striking French table lamp, attributed to René Mathieu for Maison Lunel, Paris, from the 1950s. The conical red shade is pierced with a scattering of star cutouts, sitting above a machined brass collar and ball-joint mount that allows the shade to be angled. The frame is a black lacquered crossed tripod base with brass ball feet, a compact and sculptural form typical of French mid-century design.

Table lamps in this diabolo form are notably scarce. Most documented Lunel/Mathieu pieces of this design are wall or floor lamps, and we have not found a comparable table example with this particular crossed tripod base currently on the market.

Condition:

The lamp has been fully relacquered in its original colors, shade and base alike. The finish is not pristine and does not present as new; small dents remain in the shade, pre-existing and unaffected by the relacquering, and the overall look reflects a piece of genuine age rather than a fresh reproduction.
