Description:
The Stilnovo 2701 is a desk lamp that carries the full weight of the Milanese design tradition behind it. Produced during Stilnovo's most celebrated period — the 1950s and early 1960s, when the company was collaborating with Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni, Joe Colombo, Gae Aulenti and Ettore Sottsass — the 2701 embodies the Italian conviction that a functional object should also be a beautiful one, and that these two qualities are never in conflict.

The lamp's construction is built around an articulated brass arm with a counterbalance mechanism that allows precise positioning across a wide range while holding any angle with quiet stability. The directional conical shade rotates fully, giving the user complete control over light direction. Every joint, every surface, every proportional decision reflects the craftsmanship that made Stilnovo one of the most significant lighting manufacturers of the twentieth century — a status confirmed by the presence of Stilnovo designs in the permanent collection of MoMA New York.

Stilnovo was founded on 1 July 1946 by Bruno Gatta in Milan. The name means "new style" — a founding statement that the company made good on across four decades of production. In 1988 Stilnovo ceased production. In 2019 the Linea Light Group acquired the brand and began reissuing the design classics — which means that an original 1950s Stilnovo 2701 now occupies a clearly defined historical position as a period piece from the company's creative peak.

Condition:
The lamp is in very good vintage condition. The brass surfaces show a warm, age-appropriate patina. The articulated arm functions correctly and holds position. The shade rotates freely. The original Stilnovo label is intact. The electrical components have been visually and functionally inspected and tested; as with all vintage pieces, inspection by a qualified electrician is recommended before extended use.

Product Safety

This lamp is an original vintage piece. Prior to sale, a visual and functional inspection was carried out (cable, plug, socket, strain relief) as well as a test run. It has not been comprehensively tested in accordance with current VDE standards. Due to its age, the electrical components may pose risks (e.g. aged insulation, missing earth conductor). Before connecting to the 230V mains, it is therefore strongly recommended to have the lamp inspected and, if necessary, updated by a qualified electrician. Use is at the owner's own risk.

Manufacturer

Stilnovo – Italian Lighting Design from Milan Stilnovo was founded on 1 July 1946 by Bruno Gatta in Milan and developed into one of the most significant Italian lighting manufacturers. The name means "new style" – a fitting programme for this innovative company. In 1949 his brother Paolo joined, and together they established Stilnovo SRL with a starting capital of 400,000 Lire. From the 1950s to the 1980s, Stilnovo collaborated with the most important designers of the 20th century: Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni (Saliscendi, 1957), Joe Colombo (Bazooka, 1969), Gae Aulenti, Ettore Sottsass, Richard Sapper and Angelo Mangiarotti. Many classics are today on display at MoMA New York and received awards such as the Red Dot Award and Compasso d'Oro nominations. In 1988, Stilnovo ceased production. In 2019, the Linea Light Group acquired the brand and has since been reissuing the design classics with modern LED technology.
