Description
The Junior is one of the most recognisable table lamps produced by Philips under the creative direction of Louis Christiaan Kalff. Designed in the early 1950s, it distils the optimism of postwar Dutch industrial design into a single, confident form: a broad dome shade perforated with a ring of vertical slots that scatter light upward and sideways, mounted on a gently curved arm above a weighted round base. The gold-lacquered interior amplifies the warm glow of the bulb, while the exterior orange finish — the most sought-after colour in the Junior range — gives the lamp an immediate presence even when switched off.
This example retains its blue felt underside pad, its braided textile cord, and all brass fittings. The paint loss on the base is honest vintage wear after seven decades of use. For collectors who value authentic patina over restoration, this is exactly what a well-lived Junior looks like.
Condition
Used, honest vintage condition consistent with age. The shade exterior shows fine scratches and light surface wear; the gold interior is intact. The base has significant paint loss with exposed bare metal across a large area of the upper surface. The curved arm shows minor surface oxidation. All brass fittings present and intact. Blue felt underside pad . On/off switch renewed. Socket functional.

This lamp is an original vintage piece. Prior to sale, a visual and functional inspection was carried out (cable, plug, socket, strain relief) as well as a test run. It has not been comprehensively tested in accordance with current VDE standards. Due to its age, the electrical components may pose risks (e.g. aged insulation, missing earth conductor). Before connecting to the 230V mains, it is therefore strongly recommended to have the lamp inspected and, if necessary, updated by a qualified electrician. Use is at the owner's own risk.
