Person and career
Bertil Brisborg (Sweden, 1910 – 1993) was a Swedish architect and lighting designer. His name is inseparable from the lighting department of the Stockholm department store Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), which he led as chief architect from 1941 for more than three decades – until probably the mid-1960s. Brisborg thus succeeded Erik Tidstrand (head of the department 1901–1941) and led NK from the classical modern vocabulary of the 1920s/30s into the mature phase of the so-called “Swedish Modern” of the 1940s and 1950s. His place of training, place of birth and place of death, as well as any activities outside NK, are not documented in publicly available sources; there is no entry in the Svenskt biografiskt lexikon.
Role at Nordiska Kompaniet
The lighting department (“Belysningsavdelningen”) had been, since 1911, one of the most important and most closely watched specialist departments in the NK store on Stockholm’s Hamngatan; its models were partly manufactured in an in-house workshop within the department store itself and partly at NK Verkstäder in Nyköping. Under Brisborg’s leadership, both series lamps for retail sale and elaborate one-off pieces for the interior architecture arm of NK (“NK Inredning”) were produced there. Design signature
In the Swedish specialist literature (Bukowskis Bukipedia, Nordlings Antik and others) Brisborg is regarded as a pioneer of the material combination brass–leather in lighting: at the beginning of the 1940s he introduced the use of leather as a covering for the foot or stem of NK standard and wall lamps – an unusual material choice at that time which had a lasting influence on Swedish post-war lighting design.
